Effective

Your watchlists should help you enjoy watching together. Here's what we keep, why we keep it, and what you can control.

What Were We Watching? is operated by Small Tech Stack LLC. This policy covers our website and iPhone app. Contact us about privacy or support at hello@whatwerewewatching.app.

Information we collect and why

  • Account information. When you sign in with Google or Apple, we receive an account identifier and the name, email address, and profile image the provider makes available. Apple may provide a private relay email instead of your personal address. We also store the display name and handle you choose, linked sign-in methods, and credentials needed to maintain your session and manage those connections. We do not receive your Google or Apple password.
  • Your lists and viewing activity. We store list names, titles you add, viewing status, episode/movie progress, activity timestamps, memberships, follows, and preferences such as streaming services, default lists, and waiting for a full season. This lets us sync your information and show where you left off.
  • Invitations. When you invite someone, we store the recipient's email address, list and access level, invitation status, and delivery records. These are used to send and manage the invitation and limit repeated sends.
  • Technical information. Authentication and hosting services process information such as IP addresses, browser/device information, request timing, and error or security records to run the service, maintain sessions, prevent abuse, and diagnose problems.
  • Messages you send us. If you contact support, we receive your email address and the information you include so we can respond. Please don't send passwords or sign-in codes.

We use this information to provide the service, manage accounts and sharing, keep it secure, and respond to support requests. We do not sell your personal information or use your viewing history for targeted advertising. The app does not include advertising trackers or third-party behavioral analytics.

Who can see information

People sharing a list. Members and invited followers can see that list's contents and shared viewing progress, along with profile names/handles and activity attribution shown in the app. List owners manage invitations and access, and can see invitation email addresses. Consider who has access before adding information to a shared list.

Authorized administration. Authorized administrators can view account information and service usage totals to operate the service, manage sharing, and diagnose delivery problems.

Services that help the app run. We use:

  • Cloudflare to host the website and API, store application data, deliver invitation emails, and operate the service. Invitation delivery also involves the recipient's email provider.
  • Google and Apple to authenticate you when you choose their sign-in options.
  • TMDB for title searches, show/movie information, images, ratings, and streaming availability supplied through JustWatch. Search terms and title identifiers are sent to TMDB; we do not send your account email or saved viewing history with those requests. Your device may also request images directly from these services.
  • Google Fonts for website fonts. Your browser contacts Google to load those files.

These services process information under their own privacy policies: Cloudflare, Google, Apple, and TMDB.

We may also disclose information when required by law or necessary to investigate abuse or protect the service and its users. Service providers may process information outside your country.

Cookies, device storage, and security

The website uses essential sign-in cookies. Browser storage remembers display choices, selected lists, and pending invitations. Blocking cookies or clearing storage can sign you out or reset those choices.

The iPhone app stores its session credential in the iOS Keychain and caches account/list information on the device to help screens load quickly. Preview mode uses sample data and keeps its viewing changes on your device.

Connections to our production service use HTTPS. Access to account and list data is checked by the server, and stored OAuth tokens are encrypted. No storage or transmission method can guarantee complete security.

How long information stays

We keep account information and saved lists/progress while your account is active, unless you remove them. Invitation and operational records can remain for delivery, security, and troubleshooting. Hosting logs, provider records, and backups follow the relevant provider's retention practices; we do not promise immediate removal of every copy.

Your choices and account deletion

You can edit your profile and preferences, manage lists you own, control invitations, and sign out in the app. Clearing browser storage or removing the iPhone app does not delete your server account.

To delete your account, open Settings โ†’ Account โ†’ Delete account on the website, or Account โ†’ Sign-in and account deletion on iPhone. Sign in again if requested. If you own lists shared with other people, transfer ownership or delete those lists first.

Deletion removes your profile, personal owned lists, preferences, memberships, follows, associated invitations, authentication records, and sessions from the active app database. Shared history on lists owned by other people remains, with your attribution changed to Deleted account. We request revocation of linked Apple authorization; failed revocation requests may be retried.

Deleting your account does not automatically erase emails already delivered, internal signup messages, support correspondence, or provider logs/backups. Contact us about any remaining personal information.

Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, obtain a copy of, or request deletion of your information, or object to certain uses. Email us to make a request. We may need to verify your identity before disclosing or changing account information.

Children

The service is not intended for children under 13. If you believe a child has provided personal information, contact us so we can investigate and remove it as appropriate.
